Wellington City is the capital city of NZ. It is located at the south-western tip of the North Island, lying between Cook Strait and the Remutaka Range. The city has functioned as the capital of NZ capital since the year 1865, a status that is not defined in legislation, but established by tradition; the New Zealand Government and the parliament, the Supreme Court and most of the public service are based in the city.

The economy of Wellington economy is primarily service-based, with an emphasis on finance, business, public administration, and the film industry. It is the center of New Zealand’s, film and special effects industries, and increasingly a hub for information technology and tech innovation, with two public research universities. Wellington is one of NZ’s chief seaports and serves both domestic and international shipping. The city is chiefly served by Wellington International Airport in Rongotai, the country’s third busiest airport. The transport network in Wellington transport network includes train and bus routes which reach as far as the Kapiti Coast and the Wairarapa, and ferries connect the city to the South Island.

Frequented by people as the cultural capital of NZ cultural capital, the culture of Wellington is a varied and often youth-driven one which has wielded influence across the Pacific region. One of the globally recognized most liveable cities, the Global Livability Ranking for 2021 tied the city with Tokyo as fourth place in the world. From the year 2017 to the year 2018, a financial entity known as Deutsche Bank ranked it top in the world for both livability and lack of pollution. Cultural districts such as Cuba Street and New Town are renowned for creative innovation, “op shops”, historic character, and food. This city is a leading financial center in the Asia-Pacific region, being ranked 46th in the world by the index of global financial centers for 2024. The global city has grown from a vibrant Māori settlement, to a colonial outpost, and from there to an Australasian capital that has gone through a “remarkable creative resurgence”.
